Where does my religion fit into the interview - Copeland Coaching

Where does my religion fit into the interview A reader contacted me today with an important question for consideration. She asked when it was appropriate to wear clothing, jewelry, or other items associated with her religion to an interview or to work. Her concern was about being judged in the office for her religious affiliation. As you can imagine, this is a very tricky and personal question. I will share my thoughts with you, but at the end of the day, it’s a very individual choice. I often think of a job interview much like a dinner party. At a dinner party, you meet many new people who may have different viewpoints than you. Conversations tend to be high level, centered on pleasant topics, such as the weather. Etiquette experts say that the potentially taboo topics to avoid include politics, religion, and money. These hold true in an interview as well. Unfortunately, when it comes to getting hired, studies show that managers aren’t free of biases. Those biases can influence who’s landing the job offer. Details as minor as hair and makeup can influence the interviewer’s impression of a candidate. Even a candidate’s height can make a difference. Religion however is more personal, and much more important, than hair, makeup, or height. It can be a large part of one’s identity. In today’s climate, sharing your religious viewpoints with others can cause them to judge you, either positively or negatively. When they judge you negatively, it can potentially hurt your chances of getting hired. A great organization to share your religious views with is one whose perspective aligns well to yours. For example, some private universities, non-profits, and corporations have a foundation that is based on specific beliefs. A vast majority of organizations however are not based upon these views. Their employees are made up of people from around the U.S. and the world, who have a host of different affiliations. When interviewing at an organization like this, it’s important to be aware of the choice you decide to make. If you want to minimize the likelihood that someone may unfairly judge you, think of all of the places you may send out cues to others about your views. Check the volunteer opportunities on your resume. Look at the organizations you follow on LinkedIn. Check your Facebook privacy settings. And, consider the pieces of your interview outfit that may signal an interviewer. As I mentioned in the beginning of the column, this is a personal choice. I’m not here to influence you in one direction or another, or to discourage you from holding true to your beliefs. But, it is wise to consider the positive and negative implications of your decision â€" and to make it consciously based upon what you feel most comfortable with. After you’ve landed a job, you have a new choice to make â€" whether or not you want to share your views with your new coworkers. While it’s important to be yourself, remember that your story is one to be earned over time through trust. How to Say Not to Someone Who Wants to Reconnect - The Muse

Instructions to Say Not to Someone Who Wants to Reconnect - The Muse Step by step instructions to Say Not to Someone Who Wants to Reconnect Individuals from your past spring up constantly. Regardless of whether they're previous associates, individuals you met at systems administration occasions, or even colleagues from your school years, old contacts may astonish you by connecting with reconnect. This sort of signal can regularly be energizing and complimenting however, now and again, that is not the situation. Occasionally, you may get a solicitation to espresso from somebody whose nearness you haven't actually missed. Think: that uneven relationship that left you feeling objectified and overlooked. Furthermore, in case you're stressed that past love interest will return to consume you, there are shrewd approaches to expel yourself from the circumstance before it turns into an issue. Connections shouldn't be a single direction road. On the off chance that you've had one that is generally felt that way, at that point it's reasonable that you probably won't seize the chance to be BFFs when that individual connects again arbitrarily. Before you truly shut it down, just as forestall future connections like this from springing up once more, it tends to be useful to make a stride back first. Attempt to remain from that individual's perspective and comprehend where the person is originating from. Now and again, what's going on can be the consequence of basic miscommunication. Each time you help this individual out, don't state, Let me know whether you ever need whatever else! except if you really would not joke about this. Concealing any hint of failure with kindness remarks like these might really be giving this individual the green light to do precisely what you're planning to maintain a strategic distance from. Furthermore, in case you're not cautious, you'll transform yourself into a mobile mat just by attempting to appear to be amiable. I contacted certainty mentor and Muse author Steve Errey to get his interpretation of this touchy issue. At the point when you realize a relationship is uneven, and that expression yes will deplete, baffle, or maybe even harm you, you reserve each option to settle on a decision that serves you well, he says. Try not to fall into the snare of reasoning that turning him down makes you a terrible individual or a childish one; it doesn't. What's more, there's positively no mischief in being progressively intentional with how you utilize your time in manners that are important for you. There's a colossal distinction between being liberal with your time and consideration where it's fitting and being an endless pit or an accommodating person, Errey clarifies. In case you're stressed over going down that tricky slant again with an old contact, you're totally advocated in closing down the circumstance before it even beginnings. What's more, to do as such, you have two alternatives: Be straightforward or redirect. Be Honest Be direct about your position on the off chance that you can't help right now, on the off chance that you feel this individual consistently solicits a lot from you, or in the event that you figure he doesn't give back in kind. Obviously, it's additionally imperative to perceive that toward the day's end, a relationship isn't an exchange either. Realize the contrast between anticipating repayment and feeling objectified. Furthermore, in case you're certain that this individual has consistently been self-serving from the beginning, at that point it could be useful to simply tell him where you stand. This kind of discussion may be best eye to eye, and your general message can be basic: To be straightforward, our last scarcely any communications didn't sit very right with me. I love to assist at whatever point I can, and I value you keeping me refreshed from time to time however I'm concerned that is all our relationship is transforming into. It might be difficult for him to hear, yet it could clear things up in your relationship or, in the event that anything, how he treats individuals when all is said in done. Realizing where you're freely help this individual understand that you may not be the best road for accomplishing his objectives. What's more, as an additional furthermore, on the off chance that he esteems your relationship what's more (yet simply has an awful method of indicating it), you're likewise giving understanding with regards to how the circumstance could be improved. … Or Deflect You don't need to delve into all the filthy subtleties on the off chance that you would prefer not to. Here and there, the most ideal approach to conceal any hint of failure may be to leave what's covered be-and exit nimbly while you despite everything can. As per Errey, Others reserve the option to request something they need, similarly as you reserve the privilege to state 'no.' The 5 Ws and 1 H to Start Writing Your Federal Resume - Hire Imaging

The 5 Ws and 1 H to Start Writing Your Federal Resume - Hire Imaging Who accomplished I work for? The application procedure to find an occupation with the Federal government is more easy to understand than it was a couple of years prior, yet you should in any case set up a different bureaucratic adaptation for each activity applied for in that division. With the Federal resume and a private-part continue, there are contrasts in measure of detail and length. Beginning is perhaps the hardest part. We should begin at beginnings and nuts and bolts. A Federal resume is one of three archives acknowledged as an official application for position opportunities inside the Federal government. The other two are the OF-612 and the customary SF-171. Be that as it may, the SF-171 is viewed as out of date and is not, at this point acknowledged by all offices. Conceptualize your vocation experience that that will be significant to your next position. As columnists and specialists know, there are six key inquiries to be replied with any story â€" and with any situation in the Federal request for employment process too. They are the five Ws and one H. Who accomplished I work for? Accumulate foundation data from each professional training. The Federal resume requires names and telephone quantities of directors, office names, the association inside the organization, address (at negligible, city, state, and postal district), beginning and closure pay rates (or GS arrangement and evaluations). On the off chance that you have utilized Federal structures before, you can get quite a bit of your data there. If not, you ought to collect this data â€" any oversight of these components can prompt dismissal of your resume. Where was the activity? Rundown the fundamental area of the position. Where was the workplace? This ought to be related to each position. On the off chance that your position included a lot of movement (over multi week a month) and the position that you are looking for requires travel, this factor ought to be remembered for the depiction. The notice of movement need not be broad however it ought to pass on the experience and readiness that the business is looking for. When did I do it? The Federal resume requires dates of work for at any rate the previous ten years. The month and year related with each position are the insignificant data required. In about all occasions, professional training (or other significant capabilities) ought to be introduced backward sequential request. The latest experience (the most elevated degree, latest expert preparing, and so on.) ought to be first, with more seasoned or less huge instruction or preparing following, each in its own area. There are some one of a kind circumstances where it is gainful to introduce important aptitudes in an utilitarian request instead of sequentially. In any case, anybody utilizing a practical configuration ought to recollect the inquiries that ring a bell with recruiting specialists screening your resume and application: What is the competitor attempting to pass on? and When and where did they do it? What did I do? Try not to mess with this. This is an extremely dangerous inquiry. Such a large number of candidates accept that individuals screening resumes need to have a deep understanding of the up-and-comer's experience. They stress that exclusion of the scarcest detail will give a favorable position to different candidates. This not really, and it's unsafe! A resume that occupies room with each capacity recorded in a position portrayal isn't required. What is generally essential to get across on your resume is the data that makes your capability not the same as everybody else's. Each spending examiner accumulates spending supports sooner or later in a vocation. Each framework software engineer knows fundamental coding. Each flight repairman realizes the devices utilized and the planes' control frameworks. Each clerical specialist keeps up schedules or uses office programming. These are the beginnings in a profession. The basic aptitudes are the ones that will be required for the following employment. Powerful introductions should endeavor to portray your job in having any kind of effect in the association's outcomes. Composed spending legitimization to help a $550 million data innovation procurement, says more than the underlying variant of saying you aggregated spending defenses. Created and introduced spending support that made sure about a $550 million appointment for PC framework obtaining, says considerably more. For what reason did I do it? Numerous business analysts will let you know there is one purpose behind all human cooperation â€" cash. Truly, individuals are eager to pay cash since they have motivation to need a decent assistance, information, abilities, duty to the open premium, or a large group of different variables. Cash is the least demanding approach to pass on those different premiums in reasonable terms. Regardless of whether your work is viewed as a disliked activity that nobody hastens to have, it despite everything contributes here and there to the crucial the organization or division. Since the usage of the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993, Federal offices have gotten progressively mindful of the manners by which each position adds to the office's strategic. These connections of position obligations to office strategic surface in opportunity declarations. How could I do it? This is the piece that can be generally significant in passing on to your resume's perusers and evaluators your insight into the methodology to take care of business. Compose data on your activities and achievements in a request that the recruiting authority perceives and that takes after the request where the work is performed. Occupation obstructs on a Federal resume don't have to contain everything about each position, however they do need to pass on a feeling of expert development and achievement in the event that you are to make it to the short rundown! Indeed, beginning is the hardest part. Remembering the 5 Ws and 1 H can keep you on target as you work through the procedure! I generally love to get notification from you. It would be ideal if you don't hesitate to remark underneath.

Whats Taking Recruiters So Long

What's Taking Recruiters So Long What's Taking Recruiters So Long Three hints to assist you with keeping away from the pursuit of employment 'dark opening' with recruiters.Question: When presenting a resume and going after a position, for what reason does it take such a long time before you hear any status or update? â€" Bev L.Answer: Bev, speedy inquiry â€" for the scouts who regularly set aside a long effort to get back, is it to reveal to you awful news? All things considered, you're really fortunate they're reacting at all!Typically, selection representatives will be responsive when they need to push ahead with your office. Be that as it may, in case you're not an ideal choice for the activity to which you applied, or they don't have an open activity posting right now for which you're great, you most likely won't get notification from them.Fair or not, in the enrolling scene, you are not the client. The organization filling the job â€" the individual who pays their checks â€" is. What's more, thus, that is the individual for whom they will be r esponsive. Along these lines, for one, don't think about it literally â€" it has nothing to do with you, specifically. That is exactly how it works. Now, in case you're as of now meeting with the organization, a couple of things could be going on:Situation 1You met with two individuals at the organization and they love you, however the last individual who needs to approve the recruit is in the midst of a get-away, which can haul out the procedure relentlessly. Tragically, this is normal, particularly during this season of year.Situation 2The pool of competitors has been trimmed down to you and one other up-and-comer, and the group is as yet discussing which of you the better profile for the activity is. This, as well, is normal, particularly if the position is recently made or the current group has as of late changed players. In both of these circumstances, the enrollment specialist is truly helpless before the recruiting supervisor and his/her group. The best thing you can do is to r equest their dynamic timetable toward the finish of your meeting so you realize when to catch up again. To maintain a strategic distance from a portion of these dark opening circumstances with employment forms, here are three things you can do:Make sure you meet the entirety of the must-have necessities part of the set of working responsibilities. This isn't horse shoes â€" you can't sort of meet nearly all the necessities â€" that is a misuse of your time… and the recruiter's. Nothing compelling will originate from it.Tailor your resume and introductory letter so your capabilities are obvious.Recruiters are extraordinarily occupied and just rapidly check resumes ( six seconds !) before placing you in the no versus merits a-more critical look heap. In case you're uncertain if your resume and introductory letter unmistakably outlines how you meet the necessities, hand them over to a companion with a duplicate of the expected set of responsibilities. It really helps if the individual isn't in your profession. On the off chance that your capabilities aren't simple for this individual to distinguish, at that point you know it's not satisfactory enough. Take the particular key terms you find part of the expected set of responsibilities and consolidate them verbatim in the resume and introductory letter, at every possible opportunity. This will assist you with making it past any underlying resume screenings done by selecting programming or the most section level HR organizer with no information on your kind of work. Before you apply, verify whether you know any individual who presently works at the organization. Reach them and attempt to get their support. You may have the option to place the individual's name in the online application. What's more, in some cases, this will speed up your application in front of others. Numerous organizations prize their representative referrals, as it's expected the worker would just allude somebody who is a decent social fit (signi ficant!).

Who is The Peoples Recruiter

Who is The People’s Recruiter I am so excited that Jorgen asked me if I’d be willing to write a column for The Undercover Recruiter. I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog for awhile, but when the best in the business comes and asks if you want to help out, there isn’t any answer but yes. My goal is to add a voice not often heard in our online communities: a voice from the bottom up and not the top down. I also like the idea of being an American working with the best in Britain. An Introduction I have been in the Staffing World on the Agency Side for over 15 years. I have done recruiting, sales and team management, essentially every role an agency recruiter can take without becoming the MAN. Like everyone ever who has had a job, there are parts I like and parts I don’t like welcome to work (there is a reason they do not call it Super-Duper Happy Fun Time). After 15 years though, I still get off on helping someone get a new opportunity or helping a client find the right fit to make their team work. Personally, I am an old school hippie-dippie, left wing, tree hugging, anti-establishment, iconoclast, socialist, pinko commie, but I also have to make a living! I have no problem with profit or with being wealthy. I have issues with how it is currently being done in the world, with the unfair nature of society, and with the rampant inequalities that continue to exist in our flawed lives. I try and balance the business I do with my personal values. I also try and not let the way I think things should be interfered with the way things are. I do try to make things better if I can. I think that attitude comes from 2 events that shaped me into the man I am today. I survived September 11th, was evacuated from downtown NYC, the full works. My picture was even in Newsweek. OK, just the back of my head, but I know it was me. Then, in February 2002, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Some real heavy stuff to hit me all at once, Wham-BAM! It helped me understand what is controllable and what is not, what is important and when we should just nod our heads and smile. I am too cynical, bitter and Generation-X to ever think I can change the world on a Macro Scale. I haven’t been beaten up enough to think I cannot help people on a one to one level. In my not so humble opinion, success in the Agency Staffing world is all about luck. That luck is always backed up by Hard Work. It still boils down to being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people. I have seen some horrific people nasty and rude run the best accounts, just rolling in the money. I have seen some amazing (and humble) recruiters, me included, still waiting for the “big” hit. My Goals: I have multiple goals I’d like to accomplish with this column: I’d like to share my knowledge of the Staffing World and help people improve their headhunting, business development and relationship making skills. I’d like to show that you don’t have to be a corporate stooge to do it and that becoming a top hat wearing, pinky diamond ring capitalist pig isn’t the best end to a life of work. I think that recruiters, especially agency recruiters, internally are viewed by many Managers and Company Owners as simply cogs in a machine, to be replaced as needed. We are seen by our candidates and hiring managers as circling soulless vampire squids just looking for cash. I don’t buy that, but I know it to be true. I hope by our actions and our behaviours we can improve this image. At the end of the day, I don’t have answers to why but I know a lot of answers to how. I also have full faith that the wheel of Karma grinds very slow but it grinds very fine. Hopefully, some of the things I will share from my experience will help you to do better in this business we have chosen (or ended up in). I also hope it helps make you sleep better at night because you balanced the day, the work and your heart. Feel free to follow me on Twitter, connect with me on LinkedIn and leave any questions I might be able to answer in the comments below! RELATED: Why a Great Headhunter Needs an Understanding Partner

Best LinkedIn Profile Apps for Sharing and Collaborating UPDATE: LinkedIn has discontinued all apps, meaning none of these  work. â€" LinkedIn, the most widely-used social recruitment site, provides a directory of applications available for users to add to their profiles.  Applications cover a variety of subjects â€" from creative portfolios, to travel, to blogs â€" and having already covered the  blogging and presentation applications, I will now look at the Sharing and Collaborating applications. When adding an application, the user is given two options â€" to display it on their profile, or to display it on a console on their LinkedIn homepage. By adding an application to their profile, a user can highly increase their chances of catching the eye of a future recruiter. In terms of sharing and collaborating on content and projects, there are four application available  Box.net is the only sharing application available, with the three collaborative apps being Github, Huddle Workspaces and Manymoon Projects and Teamspaces. Box.net The tagline for the  Box.net  app is “start sharingtoday!”. This application allows for sharing of content on a users profile however, when the app is added, you have to either connect or register for a new Box account and there is a limit on the amount of files you can upload (which can be upgraded to 50GB). This application could be extremely useful if the users account is linked to the phone or web app as well, and being the only sharing application on the website, its the only real option. Positive points for this application include notifications if a user downloads your content, and the ability to upload anything for people to use. Github The first of the collaborative applications is  GitHub. Powered  by LinkedIn, the app allows a user to showcase their GitHub coding projects on their profil, see which of their connections is most active on GitHub, and gives them the option to tell their network about the app activity through network updates. Github application users have the ability to follow other users or watch projects with the number of followers and projects shown on each user profile. This application is extremely useful if you have coding projects to collaborate on, however, it is not one that can adapt for other purposes. Huddle Workspaces Huddle Workspaces  is powered by Huddle, who describe themselves as the ‘Enterprise Content Collaboration Platform’. The app allows users to create different workspaces for different groups of connections (necessary for private information or documents), and to access their documents from anywhere, anytime. The app contains discussion forums, 1GB of space per use, comments and approvals, the ability to create as well as edit documents, as well as unlimited connections through the app (all for free with a Huddle.net account). Huddle is better version of Github, and gives the same platform as Box.net but with added extras (such as the comments and approvals). Manymoon Projects and Teamspaces The final collaboration application is  Projects and Teamspaces  by Manymoon  which, as the app states,  makes it simple for users to Get Work Done with their LinkedIn connections. The application can be used in any field, with users able to share and track unlimited workspaces, tasks, projects, documents and Google Apps. This application offers everything the other three do, but with even more extras, and it is extremely professional as well. One of the extremely positive aspects of this application is assigning tasks and setting due dates. Conclusions All three applications are extremely good, and serve their purpose, however in conclusion, Box.net is a good sharing tool, whereas Manymoon trumps in the collaboration stakes against Huddle and the coding-based GitHub. Manymoon offer unlimited storage, is very easy to use (as they advertise on their page), and has even more extras than the other two. They are also constantly improving their service, as they have just added Notes and Real-Time Notifications. Github is good for coding projects, and Box.net is useful for just sharing documents job posts for example. Have you used any of these applications? Do you think there are any that LinkedIn could add? You can access the entire LinkedIn application directory  right here. Image: Shutterstock

Birds of a Feather A Look at Cities with Stunningly Similar Urban Planning

Birds of a Feather A Look at Cities with Stunningly Similar Urban Planning Mankind has been building larger and more complex cities since the dawn of civilization. Of course, the structures of buildings and the means of transportation have naturally changed over the years. It is nonetheless a fact that some cities are stunningly similar in regards to their use of urban planning even though the may be separated by hundreds (or thousands) of kilometers. Let us look at three pairs of cities to illustrate this point as well as to highlight why newer methods of planning espoused by experts could signify the road ahead. Victoria City, Morocco and New York City Victoria City is the brainchild of Mazen Al Sawwaf and his associates. While quite new on the world stage, it is already set to represent an economical powerhouse within Morocco. So, are there any similarities besides this novel urban centre and New york City? They both employ a grid plan in regards to their main streets. This design is known for its frequent perpendicular intersections and easy pedestrian access points. One of the main reasons why these two cities (and many others) utilise a grid design is that they are much easier to navigate. Another benefit of this approach is that businesses can readily access the nearby communities. Vienna and Singapore While these two disparate cities are located on opposite sides of the globe, they do indeed share one beneficial aspect in common. Both are known to boast the largest number of green spaces in terms of percentage. No less than 51 per cent of Vienna is dedicated to parks and similar environments. 47 per cent of the urban planning within Singapore is devoted to the green sector. This is due largely to the fact that more efficient structural designs and land reclamation have led to a truly open-air feel. Many architects and planners believe that this increases the aesthetic appeal of such locations and that it may even positively impact the health of its inhabitants. Guangzhou, China and Tokyo, Japan Many urban planners have taken the onward and upward approach in regards to urban planning. This is particularly evident in cities associated with rapidly expanding populations and a limited amount of additional space. Both Guangzhou and Tokyo fall into this category. 93 skyscrapers are now found within Guangzhou while Tokyo is currently home to an incredible 114. Thanks to the use of modern materials and open floor plans, it is expected that the number of these buildings will continue to increase. Planning Ahead for the Future While these similarities are indeed striking, several challenges must be addressed. This is why innovative individuals such as Mr. Al Sawwaf are often consulted. They are able to successfully tackle issues such as energy provision, water treatment options and other environmentally friendly solutions. The fact of the matter is that cities are built by humans for humans. As technology and urban planning both continue to reinvent themselves, we should witness even more innovative solutions come to the forefront in the years ahead.

Building a Celebrity Brand Through YouTube - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Building a Celebrity Brand Through YouTube - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As an aspiring entertainer, it used to be that you spent every waking moment working toward your dream, with only a small hope of ever bearing the fruits of your labor. For a musician, singing at dive bars and airport lounges, sending demos to record labels, and praying that someone in the industry could see a hit record when they looked at you. For a comedian, hitting the open mic circuit, waiting until midnight on a Tuesday to perform for an empty bar with one tired bartender, and working for months to create 10 minutes of material that was actually funny. And for an actor, doing cold reads to get a speaking part in a student film, working 12-15 hour days as an extra on the set of an actual studio movie, and spending more money than you make in a month for the right  head-shots. Oh, and also, you would probably be packing up and moving to either New York City or Hollywood to “Get Discovered.” Becoming Famous A.I. (After the Internet) Actually, I guess some of that hasn’t changed. However, the entertainment industry has, and more specifically the proliferation of online content has opened new doors for aspiring superstars that had previously been locked shut. More and more we are seeing real-life celebrities emerge from simple YouTube videos in all areas of the entertainment space. It’s truly remarkable that a person can gain fame without ever leaving his or her bedroom, but hate it or love it; this is the reality we live in. Still, for every Justin Beiber story, there are millions of failed attempts to “Get Discovered” online. So the question is: What makes someone become more than just “YouTube famous?” According to Daedalus Howell, a Producer for the Future Media Research Lab in California, the answer lies in how seriously an artist takes social media, namely YouTube. “I think we’ll see more entertainment industry successes coming out of the YouTube fray once two points become accepted â€" that YouTube is now part of the entertainment industry and that it isn’t a means to an end, it is the end.” He’s right, and don’t think that YouTube hasn’t noticed. YouTube (via parent company Google) is now promoting studio-produced YouTube shows, and their market for legitimate entertainment is likely to explode in the next couple of years. Through acquisitions such as digital video technology company Green Parrot Pictures, and web video production company Next New Networks, YouTube is preparing for the next frontier in entertainment.  And we haven’t even started talking about the potential once Google TV garners mainstream attention. Real Entertainment For Real People This isn’t to say that YouTube and other like-minded social networks will completely fall into the mold of traditional media, as the platform will still be largely dependent on user-generated content. However, as YouTube continues to strengthen its presence as a ‘real’ form of media, it will simultaneously legitimize the content of some of its existing amateur artists. Google has started to capitalize on this wealth of talent with showcases such as YouTube Live, which brings some of the more successful YouTube sensations offline and onto a real stage. The company is also beginning to invest in some of its particularly talented users, with initiatives like the YouTube NextUp in the UK, and YouTube Creator Camp which provides training on lighting, sound and production technique. All of this is aimed at increasing the quality of the content on the site, and helping to develop real-life stars that Google can really profit from. (See any child star that has been on the Disney Channe l since the year 2000) As Howell notes, YouTube is now a place where real people go to get real entertainment. “There is a pervasive myth that one can get ‘discovered’ on YouTube, which causes creators to think of their contributions as auditions more than finished products ready for mass consumption… To wit, it behooves non-studio creators to bring their best game and rise above the piano-playing kittens and teething toddlers.” Dont Wait to be Discovered! As adorable as those piano-playing kittens may be, they won’t be getting a recording contract without a professionally edited video. Howell cites Andy Samberg of YouTube-born sketch comedy troupe Lonely Island, who crossed to national fame on Saturday Night Live after his organic attention caught the eye of SNL producer Lorne Michaels. We could also note the fame, albeit quite critical, that 13-year-old sensation Rebecca Black recently experienced with her, um, hit single Friday. Lets face it, a huge reason that it achieved such an obscene amount of attention was because despite the horribly written lyrics, the production quality was fantastic. Conversely, there are acts like Amy Walker, an actress who famously performed 21 different accents in a video that garnered 6-million-plus views as well as national TV attention a couple of years ago. “Watch her video again, and you realize immediately, she’s just showcasing, not entertaining,” Howell reflects. “If Walker created a narrative series in which she played a person with multiple personality disorder or an international undercover agent, she’d have a movie deal by now.” What does it mean for an aspiring star? It means that you need to take your career seriously, even if you are performing from your bedroom. Realize that YouTube (and the rest of the internet) is a unique opportunity that your predecessors did not have. But as Spiderman (who is a celebrity) famously said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Stop waiting to be discovered, and discover yourself! Paint a direct image in the mind of a producer, casting director, etc. of what role you might fit. By shaping your own brand, it will allow people in the entertainment industry to clearly see how they might take you off YouTube and into the national spotlight. Will it cost money? Yes, probably. Will it be harder than setting up your webcam on your desk? Yes, definitely. But it will put you at a distinct advantage, and when the competition to become famous is so strong, you can’t afford to make yourself forgettable. Talents versus Skills - Do you know the difference - Career Pivot

Talents versus Skills - Do you know the difference - Career Pivot Talents versus Skills Can you differentiate between your talents versus skills?Do you know what talents you have?Do you know what skills you have? For most of us,the answer to both questions will be I do not know. We might be able to say something about our skills but …. talents…. well…. Most of us have forgotten what talents we have. They have been blurred into building our career, making money, paying the mortgage, putting our kids through college, saving for retirement,…… For More:Larry Bird, Winners, Talents and Skills Talents Lets look at the definition of Talent. According to Dictionary.com tal ·ent [tal-uhnt] noun 1. a special natural ability or aptitude: a talent for drawing. A talent is something we do naturally. It is something that we do not think about we just do it. Think back to your childhood. What did you just love to do? What did you do that it required little thought? What did you do that left you energized? Think back to when you entered adulthood. Ask yourself the same questions. Is this hard? Make a list of all of your talents. Hmmm… can’t think of any or only a few? Let’s move on. For More: What are your natural talents? Skills Lets look at the definition of Skill. According to Dictionary.com skill1 [skil] noun Listen to the most recent episode 1. the ability, coming from one’s knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well: Carpentry was one of his many skills. A skill is something that we learn. Skills are developed. You might attend training to learn a skill. You will practice that skill. You can master a skill such that it appears to be a talent. This might be a hard skill like programming, hardware design, technical writing, web design, content marketing,….. This might be a soft skill like negotiating, project management, people management, ….. Make a list of all of the skills you have. This will take a while. What talents enabled you to learn these skills? Again, I ask what are your talents versus skills? Getting any easier? For an example check out this post â€" Larry Bird, Winners, Talents and Skills I quoted the great basketball player Larry Bird â€" A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals What are your God-given talents? ForMore: Do your skills match your interests in your career anymore The Crux of the Problem If you have been working for thirty plus years like me, you have developed a lot of skills. I have been paid a lot of money to produce products and services using those skills. The crux of the problem is many of us are now saying we are sick and tired of using those skills. Why did we develop some of those skills? Many times it was because our employer paid us to develop those skills? Did we like using those skills? Many times using those skills was okay! When were required to use those skills over and over and over and over….. it got old real fast. When we say, we have had enough you may hear: You are so good at it, why would you want to quit? They pay you a lot of money, why would you want to quit? Sound familiar? The problem is the overuse of those skills that were developed because someone else wanted you to learn those skills. Over the last twenty-five years, I have inhaled many complex technologies and spit them back out in culturally neutral stories, analogies, pictures, animations, and other adult learning formats. I am really good it. I enjoy the design and creation of the materialsbut if I have to inhale one more complex technology that has no real social value well……. I am really good at the inhalation process, but that is a skill that I have developed. I do not want to do it anymore! What about you? Want to learn more? Seven Ways To Improve SEO On Your Wordpress Site - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Seven Ways To Improve SEO On Your Wordpress Site WordPress is popular for a reason. This content management system is easy to use for beginners, and offers great tools to improve the quality of your website, from design to SEO. If you’re not sure how to get the best SEO options from your WordPress site, use this simple tips to improve your search rankings.   Use an SEO agency to build your SEO strategy. SEO requirements change a lot, and keeping up with the constant changes in search engine algorithms is difficult, especially if SEO isn’t in your area of expertise. An agency will be up to date with any changes and will know the best way to optimise your site for ranking.   Keep an eye on your site loading speed. Slow loading can cause real issues. Not only is it off putting for a visitor to your site, but it makes them more likely to click away without visiting other pages, driving up your site’s bounce rate. Google factors site speed into your search rankings, and will favour sites that are faster to load. Make sure your site host is reliable, so you know you’ve got a speedy server behind you.     Prevent search engines from indexing your site before it’s ready to be seen. While you’re working on setting up your site, you’ll be making a lot of changes. This looks bad to any human visitors if they arrive on site while you’re moving things around, and it also looks bad to Google, as you’ll likely be changing site structure and creating errors. In your WordPress settings, you’ll find an option that disallows search engines from indexing your site. Tick the box by that option, and change your site around as much as you like without causing your rankings to suffer. When you’re ready for the site to go public, uncheck the option, and your site will start to be indexed by the search engines.   Install an .xml sitemap plugin. With a sitemap plugin, Google can see your whole site structure, and find every page, making the indexing of your site much faster, getting your ranking more quickly.   Install an SEO plugin. The best plugins for SEO will do a lot of the hard work for you, and help you to remember best practice. Use the plugin to manage metadata, no indexing, broken link redirection, speed up your site, manage links and more.     Block spam comments. Spam comments don’t look good, to search engines or to site visitors. They’re annoying for users, so should be blocked or deleted as soon as you spot them. Spam that shares links to questionable, low quality sites can hurt your search rankings, as Google will see it as you leaving up links to bad content. Use internal links. For any new piece of content you create, try to link it to other, older relevant content already on your site. This helps Google to find more pages on your site, improving your overall site rankings. It also helps to keep people on your site for longer, as they move around to different pages.
